Introduction Located on the southern coast of Shikoku Island, just off the shore of Honshu, the principal island of Japan, Kochi Prefecture astounds visitors with its incredible scenery and its rich cultural heritage. Facing the Pacific Ocean, it borders Tokushima Prefecture to the northeast and Ehime Prefecture to the northwest. The largest prefecture on Shikoku, it covers an area of 7,104 square kilometres (2,743 square miles) and is home to a population of around 760,000. Around 7% of the prefecture is designated Natural Parks, including the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park.
The Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park sits on the tip of the southwestern coastline. Cape Ashizuri is the main highlight here; its lush subtropical vegetation nestled against unusual landscapes formed by nature creates an awe-inspiring atmosphere. An observatory on the cape offers outstanding 180-degree views and glass-bottom boats cruise up and down the coastline. Trails lace through the surrounding area, leading to historic sites associated with Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai).
Kochi Prefecture is blessed with an abundance of different natural scenery including icefalls. These frozen waterfalls are formed when the weather drops to extreme levels over several days. The icicles that are naturally fashioned can be up to 30 meters in length, and some of them are lit up at night, creating amazing columns of multi-coloured lights.
Within the prefecture are several waterfalls. Niyodo Blue is a magnificent waterfall formed from the Niyodo River and named by the photographer Nobuyuki Takahashi who was entranced by its vivid blue colour. Todoroki-no-Taki or "Thunder Falls" is an 82-meter tall waterfall consisting of three tiers all connected. Set amongst stunning scenery, the sounds of the water gushing over the side can be heard before its seen, as if it is the pounding heart of the ancient forest in which it is set. In the autumn, the green forest transforms into brilliant shades of reds, golds, and russets, making it a popular destination for visitors.
